The Gatchina palace and park is one of the best examples of such a construction in Russia, a uniquely individual pearl in St. Petersburg’s ring of suburban imperial residences. Several generations of architects and gardeners worked to create the ensemble.
The outstanding Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi was invited to build the Gatchina Palace. A beautiful spot on a hill overlooking some lakes was chosen for the building. All buildings in the park are built from limestone, as well as many of the town’s buildings and memorials that survive to this day. This gives the town, the palace, and the park a unique colouring different to every other town in Russia. Visitors can see here eighteenth-century interiors, exhibitions, and underground sections.
