The Park is situated on the watershed of the White and Baltic sea in Plesetsk and Kargopol districts of the Arkhangelsk region, it included Kenozero and Lekshmozero lakes and other small shallow lakes near the Karelia glacier shield.
Its hilly relief was formed during the Ice age. In the woods there is a great number of lakes with picturesque shores. In the Park there is a high concentration of cultic monuments of Russian wooden architecture - unique works of the Northern architects.
The Park plays a key role in the organization of natural, ecological, cultural and educational tourism. There are developed complex programs such as “Transkenozero path”, “Lekshmozero mysteries”, “Relict Russia” and others. Children’s ecological camp is organized in Lekshmozero part of the Park.
The Park is a model system of man’s habitat, an institution which is called to preserve the centuries-old history and culture of the Russian North. Well preserved natural complexes, numerous monuments of material and spiritual culture, architecture, monumental painting, icon painting, archeology, and rich ethnographical material are good illustration of its purpose. In 2004 the Park was entered the world’s network of biosphere preserves and was officially announced the world’s property.
The natural and cultural heritage in the Park is really unique. There is a watershed between the basins of the White and Baltic Seas, a contact zone of several flora and fauna complexes on the Park territory. 263 bird species inhabit the Park area; many of them are listed in the Red Book: lesser white-fronted goose, osprey, white-tailed eagle. Fauna complexes include 50 mammal species, 5 amphibian species and 4 reptile species.
Of special value in the Kenozersky National Park are the cultural landscapes of the Russian North. «Sacred» groves, churches and chapels, worship crosses, archaic buildings in the villages speak much on the Park. Outstanding representative quality of the landscapes and high density of their precious elements make the Kenozersky National park a unique area, no other park in Russia or abroad is similar to it.
Kenozero Land is a centre of ‘bylina’ (Russian epic) creation. 83 Kenozero heroic bylinas have entered the folk heritage treasury. It speaks of the rich spiritual culture in the area. The Park is situated in the centre of transportation corridor; the borderline Finland – Karelia- Arkhangelsk has a dense network of cordons, guest houses and equipped parking areas, two visiting centres, and a children’s ecological camp.
