The new international tourist route King’s Road, a route comprised of some of the oldest roads in Northern Europe, begins at Bergen by the Atlantic Ocean (Norway), passes through Stockholm and Turku and ends in St.Petersburg by the Gulf of Finland (Russia). Since the 14th century kings and merchants, artists and pilgrims have all traveled the King’s Road. If you like medieval castles and gray stone churches, romantic old ruins and elegant manor houses, the heritage landscapes of the countryside and the many specialist museums, old iron works milieus with art galleries and craft workshops - you can find it all here.
The King’s Road has not only an ancient history, but many different names too, which we can find in the historical manuscripts. They are: “The Great Army’s Road”, “The Common Land Road”, “The State’s Road”, “The Postal Road Turku-Vyborg”, “The Old Vyborg Road”, “The Great Coastal Road”.
The King’s Road is a tourist attraction that links different countries in the Baltic Sea region. With the King’s Road project Russia, the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic states join forces in order to develop and provide for the international tourist market by providing high-quality tourist routes in the Baltic region that are based on sustainable development and local culture and history.
The King’s road offers a wide variety of sights and activities, and you should easily be able to pick out what interests you most to create your own, personal King’s Road. There are many ways to travel – walking and cycling, bus and car routes.
Detailed information about King’s Road tours, organized by Russian and Finnish tourist agencies, can be found at the St.Petersburg tourist club (group cycling tours) – www.touristclub.ru; www.kingsroadfinland.net.
