The museum was established on the foundation of a collection of items gathered by a history teacher A.F.Korablev (1906 - 1981). A status of "public" museum it received on September 2, 1970. From January 1983 to December 1990 it was a branch of Karelian state museum of regional history. Since January 1991 it has worked as regional museum of history. In 1977 the museum was named after its founder, A.F.Korablev.
