Letniy Sad (Summer garden) appeared simultaneously with building of Letniy Dvorets which was built in 1711. The sovereign Peter the Great worked on the planning himself. For accomplishing the garden Peter I hired the gardener Gaspar Fokht. For beautifying the garden the sovereign ordered exemplars of the best trees and plants from all Russia and Europe. During Catherine’s time, in the garden there were organized grandiose open-air celebrations.
The alleys of the garden are beautified by sculpture groups, statues and busts purchased in Italy.
The entrance to the garden from the side of the Moika is beautified by a charming pond with swans, near the pond, on the pedestal there is standing the vase of Eldal porphyry presented to Nikolai I in 1833 by Swedish king.
In the garden there is the monument to the famous Russian fable-writer I. A. Krylov. We all liked him in our childhood. The great author is surrounded by different animals – the personages of his works.
