The labyrinth is situated on the Malaya Pitkul slope on a peninsula of the White sea 4 km off the city of Kandalaksha.
It is a religious structure presumably dating back to the 2nd millennium BC, and connecting with the magic concepts of the ancient people.
The name «Vavilon» (Babylon) derives from the old Russian word vavilonistyy, which meant «twisty, curved». All «babylons» really have twisted, intricate patterns.
Spirals made of stones in a special manner can be found in several places in the Kola Peninsula (near the Ponoy and Umba rivers, near Kandalaksha), in Karelia, in Scandinavia («Kugrosen» in Sweden). Their mystery has not been puzzled out yet, there are hypotheses about using these structures in fishing magic, which commands the wind, and in ritual dances. There is also a hypothesis about the location of labyrinths in burial grounds, so that the souls of the dead get lost wandering along the spirals and could not disturb those alive.
