The Museum of the Zoological Institute is one of the largest museums of its kind in the world and the largest in Russia and in Europe. The dissemination of biological knowledge and the popularization of the biological sciences are regarded as the main objectives of the Museum's work.
The Zoological Museum is extremely popular in St. Petersburg and is well-known throughout the country and abroad. The tours are intended for a wide segment of the public, from children to students and adults at different levels of knowledge.
Visitors are met by two stuffed dogs and a stuffed horse by the name of Lizetta, all belonging to Peter the Great, whale skeletons in rooms of an appropriate size, and Darwin’s theory of inheritance and development demonstrated with examples – breeds of cats, dogs and pigeons. The ground floor presents a corridor of shelves, glass cases and panoramas of stuffed animals, from lions and humming birds to the mummified mammoths Dima and Masha, all of which seems to stretch endlessly into the distance. On the first floor you’ll find insects, in the form of both live specimens and entomological collections.
