Arkhangelsk region
Arkhangelsk region is unique for its tourist recreational potential and takes the leading positions in Russia for the number of monuments of historical and cultural heritage. The visit card of the region is the historical-cultural complex of the Solovetsky archipelago (this is an archipelago consisting of 6 islands) – UNESCO monument. The magnificent buildings bewilder visitors with the austerity of their forms and interesting appearance. The Solovki Archipelago is a memorial area as well. It preserves the memory of hundreds of thousands of those who were imprisoned in a Solovki camp in 1920-1930.
A very significant source of cultural and educational tourism is museum collections, folklore, rituals, Pomor songs and music. Monumental painting is represented by the unique icons, brilliant murals, including “the painting of the sky”, characteristic only of the wooden temples in the Russian North.
The Archangelsk Museum of Wooden Architecture and Folk Art “Malye Karely” is located 25 km from the town. There you can find diverse kinds of traditional wooden buildings which feature reconstructed historical interiors. The exposition is located on the sector principal, which represents the models of the most characteristic settlements with characteristic planning of the Russian North. Great crowds gather here to watch the folk festivals with singing, dancing and staged scenes from traditional weddings. Guests are welcomed to ride beautifully adorned horses.
One of the local wonders is the Kenozero National Park located between the basins of the White and the Baltic seas. It is a wonderful, fairy tale land, reserved corner of the Russian North. In the Park there is a high concentration (more than 100) of cultic monuments of Russian wooden architecture. Kenozero national park plays the key role in developing of the natural and ecological tourism in the north-west of Russia. The park staff will offer you the chance to take part in ski or snowmobile trips and walking tours through the snow covered forest.
Pinezhye – is a unique natural and cultural reserve of the Arkhangelsk region, treasury of the traditional Pomor culture, true tourist “mecca” for ethnographers, specialists in folklore, ecologists, lovers of extreme tourism, pilgrims. Karst caves are the real natural phenomenon. There is the largest concentration of them in Pinezhye. Pinega river attract lovers of natural and water tourism.
75 km from Archangelsk you can find the Kholmogory settlement, where they have developed a special kind of handicraft called Kholmogory bone carving. Besides Kholmogory folk toys, Kargopol’s clay toys have won world-wide fame for being funny figures of humans and animals.
