Arts in Karelia. Travel sights and attractions
Karelian people are keeping the ancient traditions of their ancestors, which makes it especially attractive to cultural tourism. There is a number of different festivals and holidays, from traditionally religious to modern ones, which has been held only once or twice. Almost each city of the republic has its own Day of the city.
Karelia is the motherland of Kalevala, famous Karelo-Finnish epic – a literary monument of world significance. Ancient Vepps, Karelian and Pomorian settlements built several centuries ago are well-preserved for tourists.
Cultural potential of the White Sea region is huge. Solovetskiy monastery, petroglyphs, Kuzova archipelago – all these places attract fans of history and tourists who are not seeking for comfortable rest.

Petroglyphs are rock carvings made by ancient man. This is an exceptionally valuable evidence of the remote past coming to us from the Neolithic Age. The age of Karelian petroglyphs is about 6 thousand years. The collections of the museum are based on ethnographic (tools, household stuff, clothes and so on) and archeological materials.
