Novgorod region comprises the territory around the ancient Veliky Novgorod, spreading to the south and east from it. Today Novgorod region represents just a small part of the territory that belonged to the former Novgorod republic, before Veliky Novgorod was annexed to Moscow in 1478. In Middle Ages Veliky Novgorod possessed the whole Volkhov route, Neva, Finnish bay and Ladoga lake shores. The territory of the land of Veliky Novgorod spred to the north till the White Sea, and to the east till the Urals.
The proximity of Novgorod region to the both Russian capitals - Moscow and Saint-Petersburg - gives to those who wish the opportunity to follow the Radischev route from Petersburg to Moscow.
