Pskov region

The Pskov area has belonged to Russia since the very beginning. It is rich in natural beauty and historical heritage. Pskov is one of the oldest of Russian cities. For many centuries it used to be a military outpost of north-west parts of Russia and has protected it from foreign invaders many times.

The famous Pskov monasteries are located on its outskirts. A village Izborsk is situated 30 km of Pskov, where ruins of an ancient fortress and majestic nature harmonically match each other. The stony wall seems to be rising from the hill it is located on. The ensemble of the Malsky monastery stands out among Izborsk attractions.

Pechora bordering on Estonia is 50 km of Pskov. It is the western outpost of Russia, where historical building has remained. Here one can see a lot of traditional construction of local limestone. The town was named after the Pskov-Pechora St.Usspensky monastery, at first located in caves. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Russia, founded in 1473. The architectural ensemble is incredibly picturesque. Moreover, there has remained a complex of ancient bells.

The region attracts tourist attention with the Pushkin’s places. One has the opportunity to feel the historical and poetic atmosphere of the Pushkin Mountains. There is a resort-museum dedicated to the great Russian poet A.Pushkin. A well-known Mikhaylovskoe – Pushkin’s favourite country estate – is situated in the Pskov region also. The ancient house of the poet has been restored as it used to be.
