Saint Petersburg

For three centuries Saint-Petersburg has been impressing visitors from all over the world. The city is not only an open-air museum, but also an embodiment of last three hundred years of the Russian history. The city in itself is the magnificent tourist project.

Since XVIII century - since Peter the Great times - all best achievements in Russia were put in practice in St.-Petersburg. It is here splendid palaces, cathedrals and monuments are built, museums with the richest collections such as the Hermitage and the Russian museum, the famous Mariinsky Theater are constructed.

Among the many poetical names applied to St.Petersburg the most common are "Northern Venice" and "Northern Palmyra". It has been called "Venice" because the latter city encompasses a number of islands in the Venetial Lagoon, Adriatic Sea; St.Petersburg is likewise divided into numerous islands by the Neva, Fontanka and other rivers and canals. It has been called "Palmyra" because on its discovery this ancient capital became world famous for the perfection of its classical proportions; similarly, Petersburg presents a perfect combination of logical special composition and linear street layout with the wide openings of squares, tall verticals of its towers and belfries, figured railings, arch-shaped bridges and granite embankments, all elements joined together to form a single work of art.

The severe northern nature annually represents to the citizens and visitors of city unique natural feature: In May—June the season of the white nights begins, that gives a peculiar charm to the city and attracting people from all over the world.

However long you stay here, it never seems to be enough to visit all the sights: hundreds of museums and churches, its outskirts and remote corners. But there are some places that really worth to visit; they form the very soul of Saint-Petersburg and make it one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

From the vibrant colors of spring, through the sunny summer days and endless twilights of the famous White Nights, the brilliant golden sun of autumn, and into the crisp and brittle brightness of a St. Petersburg winter, the City casts its own unique spell over visitors.
